• The Northernmost engagement of the Civil War took place in St. Albans, Vermont. During this encounter, which is known as St. Albans Raid, a group of Confederate soldiers swept down from Canada and took over the city.

• Clinton County was named after George Clinton, New York's first governor.

• In 1901, New York became the first state to require license plates on automobiles.

• The first railroad in America ran the 11 miles between Albany and Schenectady.
