The Northernmost engagement of the Civil War took place
in St. Albans, Vermont. During this encounter, which is
known as St. Albans Raid, a group of Confederate soldiers
swept down from Canada and took over the city.
Clinton County was named after George Clinton, New York's
first governor.
In 1901, New York became the first state to require license
plates on automobiles.
The first railroad in America ran the 11 miles between
Albany and Schenectady.
