If you’re ever traveling through Saranac Lake around dinnertime and the pangs of hunger begin to set in, consider stopping at the Casa Del Sol restaurant on your way through. Casa Del Sol may possibly be one of the best local restaurants in the area, and its Mexican cuisine certainly stands out amongst the backdrop of Pizza Huts and McDonalds common in the North Country.

Located right on the main drag as you travel from Saranac Lake to Lake Plaid, Casa Del Sol is an extremely popular restaurant with locals and tourists alike. The one thing that is noticeable right away is the liveliness of the place. The inside offers bright colors and Mexican artwork on the walls, and the tabletops are covered with beautifully painted tiles. The dining room is small and cozy, and is the perfect place for a romantic dinner date.

The food is delicious and the prices are easy to take. Menu items include quesadillas, burritos, chicken and fish dishes, and chimichangas. One of the most popular menu items is the Aztec Torta, which is a stack of hot flour tortillas filled with black beans, sour cream, a hot chili powder, either red or green enchilada sauce, a blend of mild sauces for flavor, mushrooms and onions. The choices for filling include beef, spiced chicken, and a type of Spanish sausage called chorizo. Finally, it’s all topped off with mounds of cheese. All of this is put into the oven and what comes out is a true culinary delight and one of Casa’s most popular dishes. This ample amount of food costs just $7.95. Dishes such as chimichangas and flautas are baked by request and may take a little longer to make, but in the end the wait is worth it.

The Service here is great, with a veteran wait staff that makes your meal enjoyable. During peak dinner hours, the service does slow down a little but not enough to really make a person unhappy. If you do find the service a little slow, just sit back and relax with one of their delicious margaritas.

The only problem with Casa is the parking situation. Parking is rather limited, and getting there early is your best bet. Wait times for tables can be lengthy as well, especially during the dinner hour. Other than that Casa Del Sol is a wonderful way to put a little spice into your night. So if you’re looking for a place that won’t empty the wallet and where the drinks flow as easily as the conversation, come to Saranac Lake and give Casa a try.

Well worth it!

It beats eating Ramen.

You'd be better off eating at McDonald's.

Even the rats won't eat here.
