Healthy Fast-Food Joint Café Cumberland offers breakfast and lunch all day at an affordable price Story and photos by Jess Bellack Located in downtown Plattsburgh at 69 Margaret Street, Café Cumberland offers a casual atmosphere for breakfast and lunch. It's open Monday through Friday from 7 AM to 3 PM, offering a reasonably priced breakfast all day long.
Within the small dining room, patrons are free to sit where they wish. Since my friend Andrew and I were the first to arrive for lunch, we chose a prime table in the center of a large window facing the street. The café was tastefully decorated with deep burgundy walls and matching stained-glass windows. The menu seemed small, offering deli sandwiches, wraps, salads, and classics such as hamburgers and shrimp in a basket. They boast three homemade soups. Andrew settled on the bacon and corn chowder, while I opted for the turkey mushroom. A few minutes later, our soup arrived. The turkey mushroom contained fresh mushrooms, celery, and carrots, in a clear but tasty broth. My guest told me that the chowder wasn't creamy enough. Immediately after we finished the soup, our meals arrived. Both came with crunchy chips and potato salad. Andrew received a deli style turkey sandwich, minus the cheese he had ordered. Although they had messed up his order, he didn't let our server know about their mistake. I got a grilled chicken wrap, with a medley of vegetables, and dill sour cream. The ingredients in the wrap tasted fresh and the sour cream added a tangy compliment. My guest regarded the meal as "nothing special,” and I agreed. The bread was thin, the turkey was all clumped in the sandwich, and his cheese was missing. Without drinks, the bill came to about $20, pretty reasonable considering we ordered soup. Their breakfast prices are also practical, all about $4. Although our meal was mediocre, the service proved excellent. Our waiter brought us our meals within minutes and was friendly, making Café Cumberland a good breakfast or lunch-break spot for the workers of downtown Plattsburgh, or anyone looking for a fast meal that isn't fast food.
