 Still More Haunted?

"Do not stand at my grave and cry. I am not there. I did not die."

Story by Sunshine D. Sheltray

From ghouls and ghosts to long-legged beasts and things that go bump in the night do you believe that angels and demons are among us?

The majority of people who read books like Still More Haunted Northern New York do. I believe in the unseen and the supernatural. This book, however, uses mostly clichés—the same old ghost stories. The people in these stories claim to have strangers driving up the driveway, though the car remains unseen, and ghastly glimpses of people in upstairs windows—people who are supposed to be dead.

Cheri L. Revai's book is littered with "ghostly footsteps," mysterious childlike voices calling for Mommy, and even an "evil man with red eyes, dressed all in black, [saying] 'I am coming to get you.'" All the standard, run-of-the-mill ghost stereotypes.

Right from the first page of Still More Haunted Northern New York, the author attempts to lead us by the hand into shadows, but does not succeed. Take for example the tale of Ghost Sense. She describes the house as "on a hill that was built in the 1890s. It's one of those places you can tell is haunted just by looking at it."

Revai's non-fictional portrayals of truly haunted places should have been checked out by an experienced medium. Unfortunately, she does not make it clear as to whether or not a medium or psychic has examined them.

As a collection of tales suited to heat the blood around a campfire, however, I'd rate it as the temperature, with the wind factor, on Halloween in the North Country.

Let us know if you've seen any North Country hauntings!
