Westport Hotel

Higher class dining in a quiet country setting

Story and photos by Adam Faubert

Nestled on the edge of Westport, New York, sits the Westport Hotel, an inn and restaurant with a 129-year history in the Adirondacks. If you’re in the area, plan a trip to experience excellent dining in a quiet and spacious atmosphere.

The outside of the Westport Hotel looks like most traditional bed and breakfast inns. A porch encircles the restaurant with generous seating outside. As you enter the restaurant, you are greeted by the bar, which is flanked on several sides by counters and a good number of stools. The walls are a plain white, but show evidence of decorating with contemporary paintings sprinkled throughout. One of the things you’ll immediately notice is the spacious nature of the seating. It’s not the biggest restaurant around, but it doesn’t pack in tables and overcrowd like most eateries in the area. There’s more than enough space to eat comfortably and quietly; the extra space means you’ll never be forced to hear your neighbor’s conversation. My party was seated on the rear deck, a screened addition with wooden floors and dim lighting which was compensated by natural rays permeating the lattice walls.

Once you’re seated by the polite and courteous wait staff, you’ll have a chance to look over the menu and extensive wine list. The beer selection seems like an afterthought, with the most exotic brew being the odd Canadian import, and the size of the glass that a soft drink comes in almost screams highway robbery. A generous selection of wine, practically unlimited selection of mixed drinks, and one of the best martinis in town, picks up the drink slack and reminds you that this restaurant caters to a more refined crowd.

The Westport Hotel serves breakfast, brunch, lunch, and dinner. The dinner menu offers a decent selection of appetizers and a good variety of entrees, each served with a salad, the restaurant’s own warm homemade bread, and a starch—red potato—served differently each day as the house chef sees fit. Enjoy a sirloin steak, served in an exquisite Worcestershire sauce, so tender that it melts in your mouth. I was lucky enough to enjoy the chef’s signature stuffed potato—a baked potato with the inside removed, mixed with different herbs and spices, and placed back into the skin where it is baked again for extra flavor.

The menu also offered salmon baked with Chablis and fresh lemon, a roasted duck finished with a citrus glaze, and a cheese tortellini tossed with every manner of vegetable you can think of. Light eaters can enjoy several different varieties of salad, from raspberry chicken to a seafood chef.

When you’re all done with dinner, you can select from the dessert menu, which, like the soups and starch, change on a daily basis. I went for the brownie a la mode, which came off as a little dry around the edges, but was otherwise enjoyable. I also had my choice of chocolate cheesecake, lemon mousse, and raspberry tortes. When it was all said and done, my friend and I escaped with a bill which barely crept over $50. The quality of the food and the spacious atmosphere justified the price.

If you’re willing to venture off the beaten path into Essex County, and don’t mind spending the extra money, the Westport Hotel offers an excellent dining experience.
