A New Spin on Laundry Wash
away your laundry woes at the Clinton-Oak Corner Laundromat
Story and Photos by Ariana Cohn It is a well-known fact that while Sunday is the defined “day of rest,” it exists solely for one reason, to do laundry. Being the tedious activity it is, the thought of visiting the local laundromat weekly or even biweekly has dreaded the minds of laundry-doers throughout the world for centuries. Broken machines, needing many quarters, the heavy drone of the spinning dryer. For as long as they have been in existence, going to the Laundromat has been conducive to, at least, a mild form of stress. But finally, a revolution of laundromats has reached Plattsburgh, thanks to Clinton-Oak Corner Laundromat.
Located, conveniently at the corner of Oak Street, away from the busy noises of downtown Plattsburgh, Clinton-Oak Corner Laundromat provides a relaxing environment for all of your laundry needs. The newly painted white walls and glistening ivory floor gave me a tingly feeling as I hobbled in with two and a half weeks worth of dirty laundry, overflowing from my laundry bags. I was apprehensive that perhaps there would not be enough machines on this busy laundry day to accommodate my overloading laundry, as well as the other customers, but to my surprise there were more than enough machines. Not only this, but when the manager of Clinton-Oak Corner Laundromat led me to machinery so advanced I had not even known it existed. Along with eight standard top-opening washing machines, Clinton-Oak Corner Laundromat prides itself on its set of three highly advanced machines. Attendant Sarah Rinaldo explained to me the difference between the machines. One machine washes three pounds of laundry (about three loads), the next washes four pounds (about four loads), and the giant, most fantastic of all laundry machines can thoroughly wash over five loads of laundry. While the performances of these machines sounded outstanding, I was skeptical of how clean the clothes would actually come out. I decided to try the three-pound machine out for myself. The manager assisted me with my first cycle by showing me the levels of cleaning and spinning I could choose from. She told me that for an extra $0.50 I could set my washer to “Turbo”, which would increase the spin, therefore letting out more water, and allowing me to use less time in the dryer. The wash cycle itself took less than a half hour. As astonishing as this whole process was, nothing was more astonishing than the price. My entire laundry bag was being turbo-spun in one machine for a mere $3.50.
While my clothes were being washed, I decided to take a walk around the place and see what Clinton-Oak Corner Laundromat had to offer. In one corner of the room there is a coin machine that breaks bills up to $20. “Anything higher the attendents can also break for you behind the counter,” said Rinaldo. Sitting right next to the machine is an ATM, in case you forget even the money. Across from the ATM and coin machine is a fully-stocked vending machine in which you can purchase a variety of different detergents, bleach, and even laundry bags if you need one. While you wait for your laundry, you can enjoy a cool beverage, sold at the counter. Immediately after I cracked open a can of soda, I heard a loud buzzing noise. This indicated that my laundry was clean and ready to be dried. I wheeled over one of the metal laundry carts that are provided in the laundromat and transported my laundry from the super-washer to one of the large round dryers. Once again, there were assorted sized dryers, which are conveniently based upon your amount of laundry. I decided to separate my laundry into three standard-sized dryers. There were 21 left over. I was able to pay for my clothes by sets of minutes which saved me some time as well. The entire process of doing my laundry did not take me more than an hour. “The machines are really good,” said Rinaldo, “I like the dryers because I can fit all my stuff in there.” Clinton-Oak Corner Laundromat also offers a variety of other services which are comparable to that of a dry cleaner. In fact, they do dry cleaning. To add an even more extreme level of convenience, for a dollar per load, the attendant on duty will even do your laundry for you. But she won't just wash and dry your laundry. After your laundry has run its complete wash-and-dry course, she will iron, fold, and, if needed, deliver your clothes to your house while you enjoy the luxuries of a day off. Now, isn't that what Sundays are for? |
