Pass on the Mickey's Stromboli

A place for a low-priced and not-so-fulfilling lunch

Mickey's restaurant has the perfect relaxing atmosphere for a late lunch. A lounge area with a large wooden bar surrounded by televisions, Quick Draw and sports memorabilia, this Italian-style restaurant offers fried calamari, club sandwiches, oven-grinders, pizza, and pasta dishes on their lunch menu.

The waitress came to the table when we arrived and quickly brought our drinks and took our order for a stromboli stuffed with pepperoni and extra cheese, buffalo chicken and fries platter.

It took about 20 minutes to get the food, but the menu did warn that stromboli have a longer cook and cool-down time. The stromboli came out on a large plate with a bowl of hot marinara sauce. The buffalo chicken platter came on a bed of lettuce with a heaping pile of steak fries.

My guest informed me immediately that my stromboli looked undercooked and the first bite consisted of a piece of cold pepperoni and the extra cheese was a pile of cold, shredded mozzarella cheese. Not upset, we asked the waitress if the kitchen could cook my meal for a few more minutes. The waitress took the stromboli, silently, back to the kitchen.

About a minute later, the apologetic waiter returned with my steaming hot stromboli. The mozzarella cheese had melted all over the plate, and I realized the cook had put it in the microwave instead of the oven. This would not have been a problem except for the fact that the pizza dough was not cooked on the outside or the inside. The stromboli was soggy and it was difficult to tell the difference between the extra cheese and the raw pizza dough because they were both stringy.

The waitress never returned to the table to see how the stromboli turned out the second time. My guest walked up to the bar where the waitress was and waited about two minutes before she handed him the check, without him asking for it, and only asked if we wanted a take-out box. We paid the $16.78 bill, which included the uneaten, raw Stromboli, and left a tip. As a waitress myself, I realize that the server relied on the tips for income, but later I regretted leaving the tip because she did nothing to earn it.

The waitress never offered to take the stromboli off the check and did not seem to care at all about the customers. We never heard a “thank you” or “have a good day” from her and were never offered refills on drinks. I left Mickey's, angry, starving, and on my way to Taco Bell.

Mickey's has a formal dining area for evening dinners that I have been to and is very different from the casual lunch area with friendly servers and quick service. The extended dinner menu features several pasta dishes, soups, fish, and chicken.
