How Apple Cider is Made Safely

"They have more power than the police," says Bob Rulf, of Rulf’s Orchard in Peru, speaking about the Clinton County Health Department. Rulf’s closed three years ago because four people who consumed cider, and one person who had a cider donut, contracted E. coli. Rulf says the donuts are cooked at 179 degrees and E. coli dies at 157 degrees. Therefore, the fifth person could not have contracted E. coli from his orchard. Whether the other four people did is unknown.

Hungry Black Bears of the North
The hungry mother prances around the sleeping town in search of food. As the night grows old, she frantically goes through one garbage can to the next in hopes of a decent meal. Finally, she reaches a can with an aroma of stale pizza and buffalo wings. The mother bear's heart is content as she devours the food. Suddenly, a porch light from the house switches on. An old man runs outside shouting, "who goes there?" The frightened mother bear runs away worried about what she'll feed herself and her cubs that night.

It appears that acid rain monitoring research, like Captain Planet, might be so yesterday.

After fifty years and millions of dollars, we know acid rain is caused by air pollutants released from industrial and power plants. Polluted air harms trees, fish and humans' health. Also, tourist destinations like the Adirondacks and Great Smoky Mountains and monuments, such as those in Gettysburg and Washington, are deteriorating.
