When The Torch Goes Out The largest white elephant in Canada stands on a hillside across from Montreal's Botanical Gardens, squarely straddling a grassy knoll on the block between Sherbrooke and Pierre de Coubertin avenues. Its neck would look fine on the body of a dinosaur; its body belongs in the sky in some sort of Steven Spielberg classic, filled to capacity with extra-terrestrial life. Yet this hollow ellipse is not filled with any sort of being, alien or otherwise, not anymore. Face of War All around you, the sound of cannon and musket fire rattles your senses as the French and Indian War rages around you. If you are French, you are bravely defending against a seemingly insurmountable opponent, but an opponent that undeniably has a weak spot. On the British side, you are charging the French lines in front of Fort Ticonderoga, desperately trying to clamber over branches and obstacles placed  by the defenders the night before.  People from the Mohawk tribe charge beside you, as well as Scottish Highlanders and high ranking redcoat generals.  Read More

An old golden door in downtown Plattsburgh is a portal to a different world. The North Country Cultural Center for the Arts has contributed to the development of the arts for the community of Plattsburgh. Founders Adelina Flores Gray, Jackie Sabourin, Sylvia Stack, Fray Goldie, and Susan D. Tucker started the center in 2000 in collaboration with the New York City office of children and family service. NCCCA provides scholarship for young people to take lessons to pursue the arts.
