Game Day at Coach's Corner
Enjoy a winning meal at the number one sports stop Story and photo by Amanda DeLosh
After the winning game it is time to celebrate with an encore meal that will make your taste buds break into applause. In the small town of Massena NY, sports are a way of life for many of its community members. For example, Massena is the home of Jim “Ace” Deshaies, who played Major League baseball for the Yankees, Astros, San Diego Padres, Minnesota Twins, San Francisco Giants, and also the Philadelphia Phillies, as well as Zach Bogosian, who was drafted to the Atlanta Thrashers, and is now one of the teams defenseman. Coach's Corner Restaurant has become a landmark to many as a place of remembrance and also the future of athletics in Massena. It holds many memories from pictures to jerseys, autographs, as well as team photos of past Massena Athletic teams. Entering Coach's Corner is like celebrating a mini-reunion with old friends, as everyone seems to know everyone else in the small town of Massena. As you walk in the dim light setting will give you a peaceful yet up-beat atmosphere. Twinkling lights surround the ceiling, my favorite part, almost making it feel like you are eating under the stars. There are TV’s placed in every corner, of course, playing each sporting event that is on at the time.
On one side of the restaurant there are tables, and the other side there is a bar for those who are privileged to drink. The food is delicious, which includes a wide range of themed meals one being called “The Playmaker,” another being called “The Hat Trick.” There menu also has a great selection of appetizers. My favorites are the blooming onion fried to perfection with a taste bud friendly dipping sauce that has a little spice to it. Another choice of appetizer would be their mozzarella sticks that just happen to ooze cheese. There is also a selection of pizzas and other entrees and beverages that will suffice your food craving. The waiting staff at Coach's Corner is very friendly and will always strike up conversation with you. My waitress made sure my meal was to my liking and always had a smile on her face. One thing that I think separates this restaurant from others is that live bands are able to play gigs here. During the summer I was able to witness this, and it was definitely a crowd pleaser. It was very busy and people were dancing, smiling and laughing while enjoying the great atmosphere at Coach's Corner. Outside of Coach's, which everyone seems to call it for short, is decorated with the same twinkling lights, which are around the porch sort of reminding me of Christmas which is definitely a plus on my part. There are also tables and chairs for those who like to sit outside and just talk with their friends or family. As you can see Coach's is a place you can go out and have fun, but also enjoy a very nice meal with your family.
