Spring 2004 A Beautiful View at a Beautiful Place Ledge Rock at Whiteface Motel is more than just a place to stay... By Angela

If you get any closer, you'd be camping in the snow. Ledge Rock at Whiteface Motel sits on a hill right across from Whiteface Ski Center. It's only a few miles away from Lake Placid, the "Winter Sports Capital of the World." Located in the Adirondacks in Wilmington, New York, this 19-unit motel has been proudly owned and operated by the Baker family since 1993. It was constructed in 1960 and has been completely renovated since the Bakers have owned the property. The 1980 Olympics took place in the area and it just so happens to be the popular place for skiers, snow boarders, and the rest of the snow fanatics out there. Ausable River, famous for its trout fishing, is also nearby. With Ledge Rock’s Catch and Release Program, you can freeze your fish or cook them on one of their grills. When I spoke to David Baker, owner of the motel, I was surprised to hear that actor Grant Show, of the popular television show Melrose Place, stayed here on one of his fishing trips. There’s always something to do around the area. If you’re a lover of golf, Ledge Rock offers special green fares for their customers. Their outdoor pool comes complete with a water slide, but you’re not up for the pool, head to the pond and relax on a paddleboat. It is said that on a clear night, “the stars seem so close, you’ll swear you can touch them.” If you decide to stay here, not only will you be able to experience the beautiful scenic view of Whiteface Mountain, but you’ll also get a daily All Mountain lift ticket. Do you love to ski, but need your skis waxed? That’s not a problem. Ledge Rock has its own ski-waxing room! After you finish on the slopes, you can relax in Ledge Rock’s Adirondack Great Room, where one can enjoy hot drinks and plenty of sweets. This room has a fireplace, pool table, big-screen television with free movies, a bring-your-own-beer bar, board games, and free desert is given out in the fall and winter. Each room comes with all the luxuries, including a sitting area. You can even get a room with a kitchenette! The American Automobile Association (AAA) gave Ledge Rock three diamonds out of five. This is an indication of their quality and standards. Most properties in the region are just two diamonds. Beginning to wonder how much money you’re going to have to spend for a stay like this? For two days, it’s $196 per person. For three days, it’s $260 per person. Each room has a double occupancy and prices vary if you stay during the week or the weekend. They are more expensive on the weekends, about a $55 difference. The good thing is that all of these prices include tax! If you’re a non-skier, you’ll receive a pass to High Falls Gorge, a ride on the Gloudsplitter Gondola at Whiteface, admission to Sliding Sports Facility, MacKenzie-Intervale Ski Jumping Complex, the 1932 and 1980 Winter Olympic Museum, public skating on the Sheffield Speed Skating Oval, and tons of other discount coupons to various shops around the area! You’ll only pay $148 per person for all of this! Reserving a room is easy and it can be done right on their web site. With a variety of places to go and things to do in Lake Placid...and a fantastic hotel to stay at, you’re guaranteed a great time!
