Beartracks Give Adirondack Twist To Bluegrass by Casey Ryan Vock The Coen Brothers’ film "O Brother, Where Art Thou?" created a revival interest in bluegrass and newgrass, or Americana. Across the country, more and more talent has been emerging onto this rejuvenated scene. Even though the Blue Ridge and Ozark Mountain regions have birthed some of the best talent in the genre, the Adirondacks have their own home-grown talent demonstrated by Tom Venne, Julie Venne Hogan, and Junior Barber – the members of Plattsburgh's very own bluegrass trio, Beartracks. The group’s first album, Makin’ Tracks, produced by the band itself and Lane Gibson, is a mix of traditional and famous country western, folk, and, of course, bluegrass. Junior Barber is so smooth on the dobro, anyone could become lost in his crisp, winding leads. Listen to his play on “Cash On The Barrelhead” and “Gypsy Wagon.” They are the highlights of this work.
Listening to each track, you will be swept up by the gorgeous
sounds of Julie Venne Hogan’s floating voice. Her sound is comparable to
Allison Krauss. Songs like the traditional “Keep On The Sunny Side,” Hank
Williams’ “House Of Gold,” Dolly Parton’s “To Daddy,” and “The Leaves Mustn’t
Fall” showcase the singing abilities of this woman.
Backing up the entire thirteen tracks to the album is Tom Venne, who plays
the six-string guitar and sings vocals as well. He shows off his stuff on
tracks like Williams’ “Move It On Over.” The song “Daddy Leggy Lo” is
certainly an interesting and distinct sounding endeavor. True country fans
will appreciate the sounds of “Muleskinner,” and “Shackles and
Chains” – Venne has a warm, comforting voice that is fitting for the relaxed
mood of the Adirondacks.
The title track “Beartracks,” displays the ability of this band to make
people want to dance. This song jumps and twangs – Hogan and Venne compliment
each other perfectly. And as noted previously, the final track, “Gypsy Wagon,”
is a jazzy, majestic, and captivating piece that sums up the entire musical
ambitions of this up and coming trio. This album will send you through many
different moods.
