Meal, Mediocre Atmosphere Story and photos by Jessica Bellack In search of a good meal my friend and I arrived at J. Christophers on a frigid Thursday night. We're greeted immediately by a friendly hostess who stood at the end of the bar, with a mirror-like shine and an impressive top shelf. The décor is almost representative of a billiard, with green walls, wooden moldings, and a pool area equipped with darts. We were seated in the dinning room, a dimly lit open space with candles on the tables and a small fireplace at the front wall. Vintage movie posters like Alfred Hitchcock's The Birds and Mr. Smith Goes to Washington sit high up on the burgundy walls, and several small green plants provided some life to the semi-lifeless atmosphere.
The menu was notably small, but while craving some comfort food, I finally settled on a open-faced hot turkey sandwich and my guest ordered the Angus beef burger with- cheddar and bacon. The menu offered food typical to an American grill, such as salads, soups, burgers, pasta, and seafood. After about ten minutes our attentive waitress returned with our piping hot food. The turkey on my sandwich was fresh and thinly sliced and the gravy was tasty, with a thick consistency. The bread was rather burnt on one side, almost charred, yet the sandwich was still one of the best I've had of its kind. As a side, my guest and I both received their homemade fries, which were thin and crispy, making for a delicious addition to the meal. My friend, impressed with his meal as well, turned to me and confided that his burger was the best he had ever tasted in Plattsburgh- better than Applebee's, better than Ninety Nine. He then went on to explain that the cheddar and bacon was in part what made the burger so good. The restaurant was remarkably clean and the service was extremely friendly and fast. Reasonably priced, our meal totaled $28, including tax, tip, and two soft drinks. While my guest and I left satisfied, J. Christophers is recommended to anyone looking for a quiet place to enjoy good food and drinks. |
