Poopie's:
A Glens Falls Tradition Since 1954
Story by John Coleman If you are in the North Country and are looking for a great meal in a friendly environment, Poopie's diner in Glens Falls is just the place.
Don't
laugh at its name, Poopie's is no joke. Jerry "Poopie" Dimanno
got his name from his Italian mother who affectionately called him “Papino”
as a child. His friends later changed it to “Poopie,” and since then it
stuck.
One of the first things you'll notice when you walk into Poopies are the walls adorned with hockey sticks and framed photos of favorite rock stars, athletes, and local celebrities;many autographed. The stereo blasts a steady stream of rock music, and Poopie frequently turns up the volume a couple of notches, putting a little boogie in his step as he busily shuffles around the grill. If
you choose to eat at Poopie's for breakfast or lunch, you will find yourself
surrounded by a host of friendly locals who have eaten at the restaurant
for years. The breakfast menu consists of eggs, French toast, buttermilk
pancakes, New York Strip Steak (served with eggs), home fries, corned
beef hash, bagels, muffins, and cereal. Breakfast sandwiches are
served on a grilled/buttered hard roll and can be topped with your choice
of cheese, ham, bacon, or sausage. Looking for a lighter fare? The “cup-and-a-half” special includes a cup of Poopie's famous soups (creamy chicken noodle reigns supreme) and a half of your favorite sandwich for just $3.95. After your meal, don't forget to grab a slice of pie or a loaf of Italian bread from the neighboring Villa's bakery where its made fresh and delivered to Poopie's daily. On a recent visit to Poopies, I ordered the "one-and-a-half" burger with a side of french fries. The burger was so big i needed to cut it in half and it is the only burger I've eaten that melts in your mouth. The french french fries were heaped high on my plate and were satisfyingly greasy. You'll surely need an extra side of napkins with any meal at Poopies. At Poopies, the prices are just as good as the food, and service is timely. You will always be greeted with a smile and treated with respect. Not a Glens Falls local? You'll feel like one at Poopies. Know of any other good burger joints in Glens Falls? Let us know! |
