In 1890, Henry Vanhoevenberg had a dream: to create a place in the Adirondacks where hikers could get as close to nature as possible. He worked hard and did not stop until he built the biggest log cabin in the world. Vanhoevenberg "built trails up the surrounding High Peaks; led, taught, and encouraged the earliest hikers; and told stories around the campfire," according to www.adk.org. However, this dream was short lived. In an unfortunate turn of events, Mother Nature forcefully reclaimed the lodge. Vanhoevenbergs' dream was burned to the ground by forest fires which ravaged the area in 1903. Despite this mishap, Vanhoevenbergs’ efforts were not in vain. Read More |

Huddled tightly between three other people in steel sled, you begin to feel your heart beat faster and faster. On your marks, get set, swim. That's what the caravan of swimmers will hear on August 2, 2008 at the 12th Annual YMCA Lake Champlain Shore to Shore Swim. There will be goggles, swimming caps, one-pieces, two-pieces, and even a pair of Speedos or two, as swimmers get ready for a long dip in the lake. Actually, the dip is more like an aquatic adventure across state lines. It is eight miles from Willsboro Point, NY to Burlington, Vermont. If the swim were done in an indoor Olympic size pool it would take over 500 laps to complete. |

After the group warmed up their legs, with a number of stretches, including some toe touches, they were met with instructions from their teacher: “ginga, feinta, mea lua de frente, armada, au.” The words were in Portuguese and the class did as they were instructed. Almost every movement in Capoeira is capped off with the ginga. The ginga is the basic movement of every Capoeirista—think of a modified version of the two-step. After the ginga, the students did a feint or a fake followed by two kicks into a cartwheel. This was just one of the sequences that were practiced during a Capoeira class in Plattsburgh, NY. |
