Profiles of the North Country's People

Scenes and Beans Bevan Brady has an awesome beard. It’s dark and tidy. Trimmed. It’s the right amount of wool for a Plattsburgh resident, especially on a chilly day like today. It frames a friendly smile. He’s there most days, grinding coffee, refilling sugar supplies, and keeping the shop in order.  When he speaks, he changes topics frequently, knowledgeable in many subjects. Read More
Ayúdeme Nestled between Costa Rica and Honduras lies Nicaragua, a country ravished by poverty, crime and despair. Despite the country’s state, many Nicaraguans appear to be optimistic that change will come. One Nicaraguan didn’t lose hope and made his way to Plattsburgh, N.Y. He was able to escape the impoverished country, but he hasn’t lost sight of his people. Read More
Watch Out for Shamless Strangers Four local boys and a man from suburban sprawl Pennsylvania have been comedy-rocking Plattsburgh for the past 5 years. The money that wasn’t earned entirely legally. Read More

Another Day Down the Ice Chute

Whizzing headfirst down an ice track at top speeds of 90 miles per hour on a sled would be dangerous to many, but to skeleton athletes, it’s just another day of training. Without steering or brakes, knee or elbow pads, sliders zoom past the rambunctious, cheering crowd with little protection. Due to the speed needed to quickly complete the track, only a helmet and a skin-tight speed suit are necessary to win the race. Read More

Nuit Blanche After a long and boring winter slumber in the dark and dreary cave, a bright shining light from atop the skyscrapers of Montreal signals that tonight’s the night; it’s the time of the year again to come out of that bear-like hibernation for some price-reduced - and even free - festival fun.   Murphy greets you first, his charcoal grey feline body jumping swiftly on to the glass counter in front of the door of Vincent’s tattoo and piercing shop. He then steps from behind the black curtain of his tattooing section and into the waiting room, appearing like a tattooed surgeon with black latex gloves suctioned to his hands. Read More
