Summer 2004 Sandy's Deli A small town deli serving big appetites Photos and story by Sarah Ellis
Stroll up to the counter and place your order. The cooks are standing in plain view behind the counter, just waiting to prepare your food. Next head to the cooler and grab a soda, juice, or even a can of beer and choose your table. In no time someone will bring out your order while you're relaxing in a casual setting. Or if you want to plan a big dinner party, they’ll be happy to arrange seating in the classy back room. Placed away from the rest of the restaurant, the back room offers large table-clothed tables and more seating. Sandy’s Deli has knickknacks and photos like a family-owned business and the food that reminds you of summer. The only thing missing is bar stools! If you have trouble deciding what to eat, the cooks are more than patient. All the food is fresh and never too fancy. You always know what you’re getting. When you’re finished eating, you can dump your tray and help save the planet by throwing your cans or bottles in the recycling bin. The prices are as good as the food and barely make a dent in your wallet. A small personal pan pizza is a couple bucks. A hamburger, fries, drink, and even a sandwich to go is just barely over six bucks. This place will probably never put a strain on your wallet. The biggest setback to the old-fashioned deli
is its location. Rouses Point is about 25 minutes north of Plattsburgh.
And although you can enjoy the nice scenery of Lake Champlain and Vermont’s
Green mountains, the town is in the middle of nowhere. If you live there,
you can have your food delivered. You can also place an order for later
pick-up. Sandy’s is open until 9pm every night, but if you don’t
have a car, the taxi fair is a hefty price.
Sandy’s Deli has the food you love for a price you’ll adore. If you’re ever planning on taking a trip to Burlington, take the bridge and stop at Sandy’s Deli on the way. It’s a quick bite to eat and the food will make your stomach and your wallet glad you came. |
