Sugar n' Spice

Come in and enjoy a staple of Vermont cuisine.

by Adam Faubert

If you ever travel to Rutland, Vermont, you may want to head east on Route 4. What you’ll find may look rough around the edges on the outside, but go inside and you’ll be treated to one of Vermont’s finest restaurants: Sugar n' Spice.

As you come into the parking lot, you’ll see the restaurant surrounded by maple trees, with sap buckets poised to receive the drips of gooey liquid gold that is brought to the sugar house just up the hill. As you enter the restaurant, you’re engulfed in an atmosphere of authentic Vermont culture: wagon wheels and old snow shoes hang on the wall, wooden sap buckets of yesteryear hug light bulbs and act as fixtures, and the strong scent of maple permeates the air surrounding the natural-edged wooden tables. There are two dining areas: one on the main floor and another upstairs in the loft of the old converted sugarhouse.

The menu is a virtual feast of breakfast items, which are served all day long. You’ll have your choice of several varieties of pancakes, French toast, and waffles; all served with pure Vermont maple syrup (artificial syrup is extra). Fear not if you don’t have a sweet tooth, because Sugar and Spice offers several egg dishes, such as omelets, steak and eggs, and the Mendon Miler: two poached eggs on an English muffin with a side of Canadian bacon. They also have a sparse lunch selection including salads, burgers, hot roast beef and turkey sandwiches, and a few cold deli sandwiches. For dessert, you can enjoy their homemade maple ice cream, made with pure Vermont maple syrup and cream.

Four people can escape with a bill around $35, which is extremely modest considering the quality of food you get. Their trademark Sugar n’ Spice pancakes explode with a burst of flavor before they melt in your mouth in an ecstasy of North Country cuisine. The French toast is made on thick white bread with cinnamon baked right in. The combination of melted butter and syrup make your taste buds do a dance. All food is delivered in a prompt manner, with very little wait time.

After you’re finished your meal, you can always head down to the gift shop in the basement where they sell a variety of shirts, road signs, hats, and even some maple candy and fudge to take home with you.

Sugar and Spice offers great food at a good price. If you’re traveling down Route 4 and you see an old wooden sugar house surrounded by a packed parking lot and a swath of maple trees, you’ve found Sugar n’ Spice. You owe it to yourself to stop in.
