Several elderly members of the Champlain Right to Life Group are gathered on each sides of the sidewalk, 5 people on each side face the sidewalk as they chant the Rosary in front of the Northern Adirondack Planned Parenthood. When you think of the Adirondack region, you probably think of farms, mountains, and wildlife. If you ever decided to move here, it would most likely be for reasons of retirement or just getting away from the city life. But, what if you could start a professional career here at a young age? When she was just 8-years-old, Victoria St. John made her first rescue. She rescued stray cats. "I would bring them home and hide them from my parents," the Plattsburgh native says. Since then, she has devoted her life to rescuing feral cats throughout the city. Working with the Humane Society for a few weeks, St. John described was an eye opener for her. She realized she didn't like the manner the shelter was run. "Animals were cramped and kept in cages." And on top of that, St. John says, she was more focused on cats while the shelter was more focused on dogs.Wanting to be out on the field and to work more with animals, St. John left Clinton Community College where she had majored in psychology to begin her mission — rescue cats. |

One pig tried to use straw, another used sticks and as everyone knows the third pig had greater success with bricks. How come none of them used volunteers? Perhaps in the fairy tale world they lived in, there was no Habitat for Humanity. However, in Clinton County, Champlain Valley Habitat for Humanity is helping place families in undesirable living conditions in better homes, one piece of ply wood at a time. |

When you walk through the front doors, all you see are endless rows of slot machines, blackjack and crap tables, and video poker screens. The smell of cigarettes, alcohol and perfume fill the air as you walk through the maze of games. Then you hear the sound of slots being played, coins hitting the trays, and people who have just won it big. |
