Or you’re 2 years old, as curious as ever, and you wander off for a moment, only to get run over by a semi-truck a few seconds later, like Renee Giddings. For months your family is on edge as you lie motionless in a deep coma. When you finally wake up, you have lost so much of yourself, like the ability to control emotions, self-awareness, and an adequate attention span, that you seem to be almost a completely different person. For two days during August, 1996 the town of Plattsburgh was transformed from its regular routine to a town filled with fanatics, stoners, groupies, and followers alike for an event almost as historical as the Battle of Plattsburgh. Offered at two schools in the Plattsburgh area, Arthur Momont Elementary school and Stafford Middle School, the 21st Century Community Learning Center specializes in exposure enrichment through academic improvement, arts, and parent education. Despite the evident need for such outlets of self expression that elevate youth potential, programs like 21st CCLC are nearly extinct; endangered by budget cuts and inadequate funding. Read More

The steady hip-hop music pulsates throughout the Oraja Lounge. Boom, boom, boom, boom, boom, boom. The music flows from one genre to the next as a more relaxing guitar melody soothes the room. Warmth surrounds the souls of many as intertwining conversations rivet their young minds. A strong haze of smoke hangs heavy over the chamber like a warm blanket ready to carry someone off into a more peaceful world. One of these comforted souls makes his way to the front ready to share his poetic flow with the audience. His fluent, articulate words vibe well as they pounce into the eardrums of his audience. This young poet is one of the few poets in a new group called The Underground Expressions. Read More
