Come To Lums Story and photos by Mike O'Brien With its cozy atmosphere, reasonable prices, satisfying food, quick service, and prime location, Lums Family Restaurant is the perfect place to go for a quick bite to eat in Plattsburgh. Lums, which is open 24 hours on weekends, looks like a barn in the middle of Route 3. The inside, however, suggests more of an après-ski motif, with the comfortable red booths and wood paneling on the walls, one of which was adorned by an odd, metal sculpture of a skier that caught my eye and never really let go.
After being seated immediately upon arrival, I scanned the menu and couldn’t help but notice that Lums was advertising “the best fries in the nation.” I decided to test their confident declaration, and what goes better with fries than a burger? I went with the classic cheeseburger, while my friends decided on a turkey club and a french dip sandwich, respectively. My meal didn’t come with a salad, but I would definitely recommend the salad bar. It’s very extensive, with several kinds of lettuce, cucumbers, parmesan cheese, chickpeas, and just about anything else one could possibly want on a salad, including multiple dressings, as well as four different crouton options.
After thoroughly inspecting the salad bar, I sat back down and our food came right out. My cheeseburger was slightly overcooked, but was still very good. I think someone told Lums the key to pleasing my palate: as long as I have tomatoes and there’s no mayonnaise, I really don’t care about anything else. If you’re ever preparing food for me and you do something wrong, just rectify your mistake with an obscene amount of tomatoes, and we’re cool. On the other hand, the fries, which were just a bit smaller and crispier than traditional steak fries, were amazing. I don’t know that I’d call them the best in the entire country, but they were definitely perfectly seasoned. My friends’ turkey club and French dip, both of which came with fries, also got high marks. “My French dip was excellent,” said my friend Krissy. “Tell everyone I finished the whole thing.”
The waitress was extremely attentive, though it got to the point of being a little annoying. But she was very prompt with everything, including our check. Our damage was $27, which is not bad for three filling meals. All in all, my dining experience at Lums was great and I would (and probably will) go again. Although next time, I am all about the salad bar. And yes, the salad bar has tomatoes.
Have you ever been to Lums? What'd you think?
