Letter from the Editor
Dear Readers,
The end of a year and the beginning of a new one has always been a period of reflection for me – an occasion to marvel at the seemingly ever-quickening passage of time. And so in performing my yearly past-pondering ritual, I began to think about my time here at All Points North.
Has it really almost been two years since I first joined the magazine’s staff? While it truly doesn’t seem possible, I know that it is. I still remember working on my first article as an unsure freshman, a piece about the controversy surrounding wolf reintroduction in the Adirondacks – in retrospect, an ambitious first article for a journalism novice. I remember how nervous I was about calling sources and how thorough I was in my writing because I didn’t want to disappoint my editors.
The next week I sat down, heart pumping in unease, with my editor. I still remember the first words out of his mouth. “You have way too many quotes,” he said bluntly. “Put some things your sources said in your own words. Find a balance between paraphrasing and quotes.” I felt myself slump a little, and I’m sure my face visibly darkened in disappointment. However, my editor went on to compliment me on the information I had gathered and told me it was a great start.
Now, four semesters and umpteen edit meetings later, I’m the editor-in-chief. I’m the one doling out the constructive criticism in a firm but encouraging way. I’ve learned much since beginning as a staff writer at All Points North. From interview to writing to editing, the knowledge I have gained is truly immeasurable. Just as incalculable and equally important is the personal growth I have experienced. As a freshman I was like an unsure fledgling. Then, I became a sophomore. I gained some confidence as copy editor and then senior editor, and I began to test my wings. Now, as out-going editor-in-chief I am like a full-grown bird ready to spread my wings and fly away. But I will never forget All Points North, my first nest.
Sincerely,
Jessica Shea
Editor-in-Chief
